While you’re on the topic of RAID, you should probably look into pointing out the “RAID5 write hole”. I will never use RAID 5/6 on anything worth keeping. The performance hit is far too high, and the potential for data loss is way too high. Disks are cheap, RAID 1 performance is very good and has no parity overhead. ZFS is great in its many forms, I wish they would get the licensing sorted out so that it could be mainstreamed into Linux instead of being a userland addition. Look here for a good read on why RAID 5 is evil: http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/95946-addressing-the-write-hole-issue-in-storage-solutions

“I never thought I’d see the day when I’d have a Linux Action Show without a linux app pick”

You mean like how there wasn’t a Linux app pick before April this year when they started it?

  • Richard Colquhoun

Wow. I’m a bit surprised that people are so unhappy. I’ve been listening to LAS for years and I like it because it’s fair and accurate in its depiction of the computer world. In fact, I didn’t even mind when it turned into the Computer Action Show for a while. Sure it’ll be different for a while without Bryan, but the subject matter is the same.
As for BSD picks, Linux picks, it’s all free software, so who gives?
Meh, I’m sorry; I don’t wanna start a flame war but I’m just a big fan of Jupiter Broadcasting and respect that the hosts have lives to live as well as providing an excellent service for us at no cost. As such I doubt that any decisions are made lightly, and the last thing they would want it to disappoint.

Top 10 Reasons Bryan Lunduke Left the Linux Action Show:

    10. Inside source: “It’s like the Vampire Diaries, except replace Stefan and Damon with Bryan and Chris, and Elena with Danica Patrick.”

    9. After watching Dumbo with his kid, Bryan just couldn’t go through with being on a podcast sponsored by GoDaddy anymore.

    8. Stephen Elop and Leo Apotheker decided to cancel Bryan too.

    7. While down in the SSH tunnel mining bitcoins for Chris, a cessation of Tweets made Bryan realize his job was no longer safe.

    6. “Look Chris, I know you don’t feel safe playing Star Trek Online with a red shirt on, but can’t you wear a yellow or black shirt? Why no shirt? And that doesn’t even begin to explain the lack of pants.”

    5. Needed more time to pursue his work on a children’s Linux distribution, OpenSeuss.

    4. In the original unaired version of LAS s18e06, Bryan showed up drunk and referred to the most popular Linux distro as “Your Buns too” throughout the entire podcast.

    3. After LAS s18e04, Bryan decided to take time off and not return until Illumination Software Creator was low-resource enough to run on the potato that runs Linux.

    2. Contract negotiations broke down after Chris told Bryan, “Look, you’ve got two options here: contract update, or contract updates.”

And the number one reason Bryan Lunduke left the Linux Action Show:

    1. Intellectual property issues – Children’s Television Workshop issued a trade complaint alleging that Chris and Bryan violated their trademark of Bert and Ernie. A German judge was quick to issue an injunction.

Try ZFSonLinux – no need for BSD. Using it for my home server running in an ESXi VM.

It’s one thing to state your opinion. It is another to make someone feel unwelcome at the expense of a joke. Get off the playground and grow up.

I enjoy Bryan’s show input. I was looking forward to his promised server to replace the corporations’ clouds. I was disappointed when there never seemed to be a final product. For me, part of the appeal of the segment was the technical side.

Now that Allan is here, I look forward to the shift towards more technical content. I enjoy the BSD integration, but I hope to see some technical Linux pieces from Allan, as well.

I can’t deny that Bryan has a more enthusiastic personality and I will welcome his return, but I like that Allan is Allan. If I want enthusiastic personality, I’ll listen to Dan and Fab.

So, keep up the good work, Allan and Chris. I enjoy what you are doing and the direction the show is headed.
