A little correction about Virtualbox: There are no longer a open source and proprietary version. There is only the GPL version which can be extended by an optional proprietary plugin. See https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

In short: You can use the version from your distro repo and just download the extension file if you need the extra features.

I’ll try to make sure we give that a mention next episode, thanks!

I’m really not feeling your co-host. WHERE is Bryan?

  • Ms Catherine Anne Ashley

Yeah, I agree. Back in August 2010, project manager and main dev for VBox were on FLOSS and mentioned there were only about two featues not being released in open source, they called it open core, but indicated they are going away from that model.

Why don’t you make links.linuxactionshow.com as a short cut for your subreddit page and linuxactionshow.com as a directly short cut to the LAS page?
I’ll also recommend you to register linuxactionshow.tv ;)

Why is everyone Hating on Allan, He is a great host. Yea the show has changed since Bryan left but things change, Get used to it.

  • StuckInRenton

I’ve been using VirtualBox for a few months. Now, I should be able to eek out a little more performance.  Allan seems to be getting more comfortable in his co-host role, and is incredibly knowledgable. He could really use a signature prop, maybe a funny Canadian hat (the kind with the big ear flaps) or something.

Allright next week, episode about container based virtualisation :P . OpenVz ftw! Also I hear LXC is shaping up nicely. I got about 15 vms running on my playbox and its smooth.

  • Jungle-boogie

he is getting very comfortable with the format of the show. I think he’s quite interesting and nice to see him on LAS.

Ok so does any one know how to install virtualbox on FreeNAS 0.7.2? I have a i7 with 6gb of ram just so I can control 10 drives and soon to bee 20 drives. Yes I know it is over kill but I was planing on using it to do more then just NAS stuff.

  • capn0jack

You said you were going to release these VMs as VBox images.  In case you meant that literally, you should export them as OVFs/OVAs, instead.

Welp, in reference to you guys asking what we might wanna see. I am trying to learn more about Linux. Not one particular thing, But getting deeper and more knowledgeable about everyday stuff, and about those rarely used but AWSOME tools. Also, I am trying to learn how to use the command line more, but with out a doubt, I am a very “mouse oriented” kind of guy, so things that work awsome with a GUI is perferable, but if the command line so much better “like making a .conf file for samba” then go more into detail about how to do it.

And last but in no way least. I very much suggest that these kind of tips be on a predictable basis, but also not be that often. I love learning, but sometimes I just like hearing Linux news or reviews of distros or software.  Maybe every other 2 or 3 episodes, have a “IN-Depth” style tutorial or lesson on how to do something or to learn more about something.

For example, please explain what the history and difference between all the different package managers on each dsitro, Pac-man, Apt-get, Yum, RPM files, DEB files. Please have a lesson explaining history of all these, what the differences are, and how to use them. Both in command lines and in GUI’s. Ubuntu is the easies for newbies, but a HUGE stumbling block for me is trying to use a different distro like Fedora or OpenSUSE and being completely lost on how to install software, change settings, and why some command line tools are included in some distros while missing in others!!.

Ubuntu was easy as heck to get into back when I was almost totally computer illiterate at 22 years old, now almost 2 years later I am relatively fluent in how to do all these things in Ubuntu and other spin offs, but am LOST when try other Linux flavors.

Anyways, done ranting now, God Bless ya guys,

Allan just has a different personality style. Bryan is the kind of person where he makes himself the star of the show, even if he is only suppose to be a extra with like 2 lines lol. The only thing I don’t like is that some of Allan’s comments are so advanced or educated about a subject, that I cant even begin to follow him even if I Google all the technical words he’s using. So in that respect, it does make me miss the “B Man” a bit.

p.s. Bryan has stated he is on a sabbatical (lots of time off) to focus on various other things (not being specific what) Honestly it did seem lately that he was loosing some of his energetic fire that he once had. Hopefully if he returns, he’ll have been refreshed with a nice can of gasoline poured over that fire. :-)

But either way, God Bless the B-Man and his family, hope they’re doing good!!

    It’s not that Allan sucks…he’s great on tech-snap.  He’s the no-nonsense in-depth expert.

But this is the LINUX ACTION SHOW!  Not the Linux “Dry wit and slow uptake while promoting BSD” Show.  Allan is just not the guy to say “CHRIS, CHRIS, CHRIS! CHRIS! The newest spin of Fedora makes me want to find all babies in the world and take their lollipop away so they cry like I am.”

He’s just the wrong guy for this show.  I want over-the-top wildly inflammatory commentary.  I want shameless self-promotion.  I want to hear “ALLLLLL this WEEK!  On the Linux Action SHOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowUH!”

  • LeeAnne

the person who made the reddit page thing did so awhile ago and most likely didn’t have access to the DNS zone to make a cname.

On the notion of Netflix and Steam being the two persistent rumors..

That may be, and to be sure Steam would be nice, but personally I’ve stopped waiting on them and instead turned my attention toward Desura (Desura.com) – they’re working on their Linux client (currently downloadable – but you can’t log in unless you’re part of the Beta invites – maybe wave that LAS press card for a preview ? ;) )

Anyway, Desura seems far more interesting from a Linux perspective as it much more actively promotes Linux as a distribution platform and it will make it much easier for all indie-developers to publish their games — in other words, Desura is a gateway for games on Linux and if it picks up pace, I’m sure larger game projects will be released in this way.

Allan is great! I enjoy having him on the show and am constantly impressed with his working knowledge. I definitely liked Bryan well enough and used to catch an episode once in a while when he was on but …since Allan has come on the show I find myself anxious for the next episode to come out and have not missed one since, so glad he’s here!!!

    I agree with Joe Gullo.

If the seasons aren’t going to have cliffhangers or sweeps weeks, could they at least be coordinated with the length of Allan’s hair? When he gets a buzzcut that marks the start of the new season.
