Why Desktop Linux (Still) Sucks. And What We Can Do To Fix It.

A follow-up to last-years “Why Desktop Linux Sucks” session, we’ll take a look at the progress Desktop Linux has made over the last year. Then we’ll look at where it is still broken and what needs to happen to fix it.

Thanks for getting this up there for us non-yanks.. I strongly agree on every topic (in spite of not always wanting to :P )…

Hell, you even made me want to donate money, hope others felt the same after this, good job :)

I could only watch the first 5 minutes of this video, it seemed interesting but I just wanted to kill the camera man! Was he drunk?

  • Jeff

I wanted to watch this, but the camera work is obnoxious. Just put the speaker and the slides in frame and leave it alone. Stop zooming in and out. Stop moving back and forth. If you have to pan do it SLOWLY. The shakiness is the worst part… was a tripod out of the budget?

I could watch your presentations all the time. Of course that won't be helping the Linux Community in the long run lol…
Great presentation, hope you get your point across to the software developers in the Linux Community

Linux needs games? Well, this is a classic tale of what comes first, the chicken or the egg.
Meaning, YOU NEED A GAME DESIGNER FIRST, before you get a game, just saying. I think ASCI's RM2K3, XP, or VX, actually are Linux ready, but don't qoute me on this. OR have Linux have it's own original Game Designer, it can be done, if you just make a quick, cheap, Pixel based system, it would work.

Steam will probably come to Linux this year, so Linux will have top games like CoD and Assassin's Creed. And Doom 3 engine will be open sourced, which means that FOSS games like Alien Arena will finally look great.

  • smeep

Of course you realize that the games themselves have to be ported to Linux too, not only the sales platform. Neither CoD nor Assassin's Creed will magically start working on Linux, its up to the publisher to decide if they want to invest money in a port.

OS X isn't that much different than Linux, since Steam is heading to OS X, porting games over to Linux wouldn't be that hard at all.

  • l4linux

No doubt about that, but Steam is a good first step. And I 'll add that the GPU drivers must improve a lot to handle such cutting-edge games.

  • Erlend

Well, the same answer goes: “Of course you realize that the games themselves have to be ported to Linux too, not only the sales platform.” Now admittedly, Valve /are/ actually porting some games over. But that's not the same as porting Steam.

My band did our album with Ardour http://www.myspace.com/thehaloblue And we used Audacity for wav editing.

well, nice and interesting. and to the guy who shot this video: get a fucking tripod!

“Make money off Linux”, I think the presenter is forgetting the reason Linux was introduced in the first place.  Just as America was created; because, of persecution of one’s beliefs.  So too, was Linux created; because, of the stranglehold the proprietary distributors had on the consumer.

Until Ubuntu, Linux was never about a massive user base.  Rather, it is an alternative to Windows and Apple.
