The Kill List | Unfilter 3

Obama keeps a list of drone targets, the Flame virus goes after the middle east, and some tuna have some real radiation problems. It must be an Unfilter news round up!

Tune in to find out which stories are crap, and which are legit. Plus we breakdown the real story behind the Flame virus, and have a good laugh at the big media’s hype of it.

    Hi
Was a littte disappointed at the imho little research on the nuclear desasters:
10 years after chernobyl 10% of wild boars in the woods near me (2000km from the site) could not be eaten because of too high radiation doses. (English at the bottom)

You also did not distinguish between external radiation and radionuclides which can enter the body…
and you guys are so shure that it wont happen near you. Fukushima was in Japan one of the countries with the highest technological development, if it happend there it can happen anywhere. (I mean also the neglect that went on). I was astounded that none of you mentioned the three mile island incident.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_mile_island

You didn’t compare the uses of radioaktive energy to the costs:
    -  were to put the waste. (e.g. Germany has no dump site which can withstand a few hundeds of thousands of years, we are in fact just about to excavate all old waste from the previous “final dump site” becouse of geological uncertanties and water break-in’s)
    -  an accident make huge areas uninhabitable and usesless for farming for thousands of years. (Japan has one of the highest population densities)
    -  who pays for the waste disposal and the the cleanup after an accident.
Here in Germany the companies only pay part of the cost most of it is tax euros.

It seem to me that while shouting that all of Europe has fallen to the Propaganda of the Solar industy you have forgotten, that the nukular industry is not too bad at propaganda itself.

Dont get me wrong I also think that solar energy is not the future but a mix of renewable energies.
I just wanted to show you the in my opinion missing perspectives.

    love your shows

22 gigawatts PER HOUR? Watt is already a power unit!

  • Chumley

    Hi Chris,

Your article on Germany’s solar energy talks of 22GW/hr. You don’t know how many times I see the use of the erroneous unit GigaWatts (or Watts) per hour and shake my head in disbelief. Watts (and GigaWatts) are a unit of power and power is a measure of energy per time. So a measure of power per time doesn’t make any sense in the context used.

It makes me wonder where you found this ‘scientific data’.

Keep up the good work though – there’s some great shows coming out of Jupiter Broadcasting.

Where can I get that intro song?

  • ChrisLAS

Ah that’s interesting, I think it came across in the show we were skeptical of this article. Kinda seemed like they were selling something, and I think Chase even kinda questioned who.

The fact that the type of measurement they used is wonky, that even further backs all that up.

If you wanna take a look at the source, we have it linked up at the top of the show no es.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Fair, the tuna story was improv on our part, and not something we had really looked into.

The clip I had blogged on filterfree.me as part of my “starting to track this now” kick off. So it was off the cuff.

    Excellent show guys, very informative.

    Good show. Couple of points.

     - I
think if your going to talk about media bias it’s important to not
forget that correlation does not equal causation . It indeed may
seem extremely coincidental that media companies have invested
interest in certain corporate agendas, and it is a fact that they are
sponsored by those corporations, but I think you can run into the
problem of over emphasizing those connections without having to bring
any sort of evidence to prove it. There is no doubt large corporate
media coverage is biased, but sometimes I think media bias is just
for the sake of sensationalism, for ratings sake, rather than direct
corporate directives from invested parties. I mean Glenn Beck types
are entertainers, for example, like a circus show, rather than news.
I am pretty certain the real Glenn Beck doesn’t even believe half
of what he rants on about. It’s a show. News is the title not the
    content.

    American
imperialism in the middle east has always been about Russia, China,
and peak oil. They have know about peak oil for some time, and
whoever controls the oil will have military and economic dominance
when the cost starts to become unmanageable. You cannot run a
military industrial complex without control of oil. You will see
more of this when it comes to the melting Arctic Ice (I’m from
Canada so this could relate to a topic for you guys talking about
“the rest of us”) and the oil that might be available up there.
Canada, incidentally, should be your most important ally since we
have all the oil (and water) of the future. So you better get into
    hockey now or else!!

    For
some future topics I would suggest reading “Death of the Liberal
Class” by Chris Hedges. There is a lot of important topics he
brings up that could feed many a show. Agree, or disagree. (or
    Empire of Illusion)

    One
note about your energy discussion and nuclear vs solar. Something
you are overlooking when talking about nuclear is externalites. In
economics an externality is cost that a company doesn’t pay for
that gets passed on to the public, and is not reflective of the
price. Nuclear is mostly safe, but its externality cost if disaster
strikes is not being taken into consideration. Something like
Fukuashima happening in the States or Canada could be a lot more
costly than is represented in the price. So solar might not be as
efficient right now, but it doesn’t have the same externality cost
    to society that nuclear does.

To shed som light on the solar energy question…
The German ministry of energy reported a production of 6.6 TWh of electricity in 2009. In 2011 the production was 19 TWh.

According to the IEA, production of electricity from nuclear power was 135 TWh in 2009.

    Installed photovoltaic capacity by year:
    2009    9,9 GW
    2010    17 GW
    2011    25 GW

Nuclear power plants typically produce electricity at a capacity of 500-1500 MW (per reactor) depending on design. So yeah, the installed solar power plants have an equivalent capacity of roughly 25 nuclear reactors. However, nuclear reactors are usually run at near full capacity, while solar power plants only approach “full” capacity for couple of hours a day (on sunny days).

Comparing different energy sources is a bit more complicated than simply looking at the numbers.

As for GW/h, I guess it makes sense if they install 22 GW of capacity every hour, in that case: wow ;P

And no, I’m not from Germany but I’ve worked with gathering and reporting energy statistics for the EU.

  • Gup0

     Gah!
A mistake on the second line:
that’s supposed to be TWh photovoltaic, total electricity is a *bit* more…

  • SoulIsTheAnswer

    Yeah
it’s supposed to be GWh. Power Plants use the measurement kWh (1 Kilo
Watt * Hour or 3.6 MJ (Mega Joule))
    as
a billing unit. But it’s a mistake that many people make. Look here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwh#Confusion_of_kilowatt_hours_and_kilowatts. That doesn’t mean the numbers aren’t correct.

    The
problem is that, as the article also mentions, energy cost are up
since the German government subsidizes every solar panel you
install on your roof. That is a problem, especially for poor
    families.

  • Trelawney Kerley

Just a thought about solar panels up towards the arctic. Would be a rather good idea (although the reporting sounds rather lacking in data) simply due to the long daylight hours in the summer, so even if you could supplement your summertime usage it would go a long way to reducing fossil fuel usage.

Also, you can thank Bush for both PATRIOT and NDAA, and Obama for expanding and extending them. No Dem/Rep bias here, I’m an Aussie :)
