Microsoft has embraced SUSE and Ubuntu, and more open source developers are going full time. Is this the dawn of a new era rising over open source? Or desperate moves to stay profitable? We debate!

Plus: Chris makes a big announcement, and a super easy way to install custom fonts you find online, in Linux!

next time, get your fonts from here  http://theleagueofmoveabletype.com/  Open Source fonts, all of them   http://theleagueofmoveabletype.com/manifesto

Nice! Thanks for the share. :)

Since this has come up on YT, I’ll cover it here as well. You can extract and then simply double click on the font ttf files. And that is awesome…now. Where it’s not so awesome, is when the font installer has a bug. It’s not impossible and therefore, I opted to show folks how to install fonts without depending on a “soft” front end tool. ;)

    Thanks everyone

  • http://scottlinux.com scottlinux

To install many fonts in Ubuntu, you can just double click on the font (double click the ttf file). That is all you have to do. Cheers,

Edit: whoops I see Matt already posted this.

  • mjamesrd

I have always just put my font’s into /home/user/.fonts that way my fonts never get lost when I backup or re-install.  Is there a reason not to do it this way?

how is it always some really flat guy who replaces brian? wheres that guy that goes off fishing for months at a time? if you want to team up with people chris you need a more interesting character to complement your straight guy presentation style

    Hi LAS people,

I can also confirm the Steam client for GNU/Linux before the end of this year!

I did sent an e-mail to him with the question if he can confirm the rumours and again he said ‘Yes’.

So people it is true! No need to spam him also ><

    Have fun!

    Kind regards,
    Melroy van den Berg

Your criticism is unwelcome. It is not constructive and offensive. Matt is doing a fine job and his efforts are appreciated here.

  • koala

I totally agree with you Chris. All personalities are welcome, and Matt is fantastic. Keep up the good work and thanks!

    Thanks Chris and Koala. ;)

Are you volunteering? I ask not to be a jerk, rather out of serious curiosity?  Kidding, kidding, I’m just messing with ya. ;)

See, the substitute co-host gig is just something we offer because we’re passionate about the show. That said, yes, I am a deadpan as they come. Even stranger, ironically even, I used to work with various comedians on different projects, the most recent one being the person’s voice behind this ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGQXO00VQCE She needed podcast work done, I was there to provide support for a gig she had going for comics on stage. While we never completed the gig, I was working with some amazingly funny people. So it’s not like humor is foreign to me. :)

My personal styling for the show is to pull back a bit and let Chris take the lead. Bundle this with my own low-key nature, I find that providing a supporting role serves the viewers of the show far better than me trying to be more “animated”. Bryan is one of a kind. Short of cloning him, there’s no duplicating his great on-air personality in my book.

Hope this helps to clarify things better,Matt

No worries, I give ya props for making sure people know about this. I should have mentioned it during the show. :)

  • http://twitter.com/matthartley Matt Hartley

That totally works, too. The difference is that works great for that user, where as the other method I touched on works system wide. Both methods are just fine though. :)

Long time listener – first time poster :)
I love all the guest hosts – 2 by my count right?
Dude you are like a friend that one misses when he’s not there.
Your opinions carry some emotion. Some of the pitfalls, the highlights etc. – you like sharing knowledge.
Bryan is one of a kind … he’ll run into bushes without warning. God bless him.

Seriously. I enjoy the show very much.
Just now I’ve figured out why I like you – you guys aren’t putting on a show.
You guys share what you are passionate about.

Thanks – keep it up and help keep us sane in this madness of software :)

     Hey Matt

Please don’t take opinions so seriously, especially when they have a hurtful nature and are from people who don’t have the gut to put their name in their opinion (yes, everyone can be a loud mouth in the in the anonymity of internet).

I personally don’t follow your tutorials, but i thibk that they’re really good tutorials, useful for ubuntu users and i like that you take the time to create those turials, kudos.

Thanks for being in the show, your participation is much appreciated.

The problem is of course with the semi-manual method shown in the video is security and stability. By opening Nautilus as superuser (root) a new user could potentially, accidentally delete important system files causing their system to malfunction.

[side note, in Ubuntu use gksudo to open nautilus as root. i.e. "gksudo nautilus" this is also a security measure to make sure sudo goes through the graphical subsystem]

By using the double-click method the end user is only offered 1 password prompt and the system handles the rest. (The debian/ubuntu/automation philosophy “make the computer do the work”)

The likelihood of bugs in the font installing subsystem is small, didn’t find a huge list of bugs for that system on launchpad. If a user encounters a bug then they can report it.

The manual method is fine, just don’t claim it’s for newbies. Newbies play better in a sandbox until they are comfortable breaking things and fixing it themselves.

That said, the manual method allows one to install several different fonts at the same time.

Keep up the great work. It’s nice to see the community learning from each other and great to have these video’s to keep everyone current.

I have followed LAS for a few years but never posted anything.  Love the shows.  I’m sure there are many like me who couldn’t disagree more with this comment.

Everybody I have seen on Jupiterbroadcasting shows seem extremely genuine, smart and GOOD people.  This is what attracts me most to the linux community in the first place.  Cheers you all.

100% agree – Matt is great

Over the years, I’ve learned that a dialog can often create bridges. Other times, it just clears the air on my end and lets folks know that I am not bothered nor stifled by those who don’t enjoy my approach.

    Thanks for the support :)

  • http://twitter.com/matthartley Matt Hartley

Thank you for the kind words and support. :)

  • http://twitter.com/matthartley Matt Hartley

You present a great perspective from the security side of things. Very true. If someone wasn’t paying attention…there could be a nicel sized oops.

Sadly though, I have also seen instances where stuff like installers, fail. And one might need to use the CLI or nautilus (with privileges), to correct the problem. It happens. So from my perspective, I would much rather have someone copy carefully typed text into a terminal than trust that the font installer is always going to work. Stuff breaks, bugs out, and I hate to lose folks over silly frustrations like that.

That said, I do agree that great care must be taken. And in the future, I will definitely remember your point and make it very clear — gksudo/sudo/su is a loaded weapon…aim it carefully. :)

    Thanks again :)

Agreed, the anonymous poster isn’t worth it, and probably a troll anyway.

Following the logics, an AMAZING brand name should be Ubuntu/Debian/GNU/Linux…
