Not sure if it’s related, but I’ve stopped using the affiliate links because of Unfilter and how nutty the whole thing is – I’m willing to bet that with the end of STOked and the rise of Unfilter part of the reason you’re losing affiliate income is that your driving some of your audience away. Pre-Unfilter, I made *all* of my online purchases via affiliate links deliberately in order to support the network (and I buy a lot of stuff online). Since Unfilter started up, I’m much less inclined to donate to the network because it’s moved from a tech / geek network toward a more political agenda. I may be in the minority, but I’m willing to bet if you were to poll the audience that you’d find you’re driving away money by poltiicizing the network.
Maybe you should poll your audience and see what kind of shows they want in order to rebuild your subscriber base and increase revenues. Just a thought…

  • rco

I know I stop using affiliate links after stoked was canceled and unfiltered started. SToKed is what drew me to jupiter broadcasting and it what is pushing me away.

  • http://twitter.com/Mr_Gentoo Derrik Diener

One show makes it a political agenda? What? If you don’t like unfilter don’t listen to it. Its like one show. There is still techsnap and coder radio and LAS.

  • georgezilla

Yea, but then what would they have to whine about? I don’t play STO so STOked being gone is no big deal. But I do play GW. SO I should stop watching JB because of that?

    LOL.

And why is Unfiltered nutty? Because he has an opinion different then yours? Or just because he has an opinion? Maybe because you don’t? And so he shouldn’t have one either?

And you forget that JB isn’t your network. It’s not here for you. Don’t like a show? Don’t watch it. It’s that easy. But why not support the ones that you do watch? Like this one. You know what happens to the ones you do like/watch if Chris can’t make enough money to support this network AND his family? You loose all of the shows, you are just SOL.

So use the affiliate links from this page. Or from any of the other shows you do watch.

Chris, don’t you get info back on the affiliate links? Does it show where they come from? As in which show generates how much money? Thus being a “poll” of the viewers?

Support the network and Chris. Use the damned links.

    Geez.

  • franzkafka

Nope. It’s my money and my perogative as to how I use it. I disagree with the direction of the network; I feel less inclined to be supportive of Chris’ efforts to run it. For the same reason I don’t donate money indiscriminately to charities (I donate to those I agree with), I won’t donate to the network. The network is essentially a charity and I’m not going to donate if I don’t agree or appreciate the political bent of the programs.
Again, money talks. If Chris is making enough money as is, go nuts and ignore my opinion. But given that revenues are down, I can guarantee you could link some of that to Unfilter. As I said, take a poll – if I’m wrong and the majority of members want Unfiter, keep going. However, if the network is meant to be a business (which I assume it is) you need to listen to your viewership who, it seems, are voting with their wallets (as I am).

  • franzkafka

One show does make for a political agenda.
To be honest, the network lives and dies on Chris’ personality and the ability of the audience to connect with Chris. With Unfilter and the whole conspiracy-theory angle of the show it makes it harder to connect with Chris (ie, limits his audience), and thus it makes the network less viable.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Chris has metrics that show that the Unfilter audience is driving the network through donations, but it seems strangely coincidental that a controversial new show airs and the revenues on the network go down.
For me, personally, the appeal of the network has always been Chris, not the content (which I can get elsewhere). As I watch Unfilter and have a harder time identifying with Chris, I enjoy other shows less too, which makes me less inclined to watch and much less inclined to donate.
Chris needs to appeal to a broad demographic. With every Unfilter, he narrows that demographic and makes it harder to identify with him. In my mind, he’s gone from the fun, cool IT guy that I can talk about Linux and micro-brews with, to that weird IT guy with shaded blinds who says the government’s listening to my cell phone.
Again, this is purely my perspective and your mileage may vary. Maybe Unfilter is going to save JB and if so, more power to Chris and I’ll find other podcasts to listen to. However, I think that the show does more harm than good (financially) for the network. Again, from my personal experience I feel less inclined to watch and donate since the show started because I feel less connected to Chris, and therefore, the network.

  • Sean Newboy

    Loved the episode.

I still use the affiliates when i have money to spend, i love me the amazon.

  • CozzyB

“I think it is totally insane to claim that the network lives and dies on Chris”
Obviously he is the main part of the network, but I used to enjoy watching MMOrgue and Fauxshow more then anything else besides Stoked, and both of those shows didn’t have Chris, there is so much variety and personality in the shows that to just label it is insane.

I also think if anyone here who previously donated (nevermind affliate) now does not just because the Unfilter show disagrees with their views, I would call them immature and immoral, Chris, Angela and co all provide you FREE entertainment week in week and and lose money doing so, and affiliates especially cost nothing to do, I believe the reason they have dropped is likely what was said, i.e. the Chrome update broke it.

  • Cozzyb

Also one last note, I actually like the idea from above of doing a pro or anti Unfilter poll, mostly because I know the results will be pro, and hopefully make those who constantly try to tell us that Unfilter is unpopular, well honestly shut up ha.

  • CozzyB

Didn’t notice that you actually said you have removed the affiliate, I honestly am disgusted in you as a person, to stop supporting a network you still watch, that would cost you literally nothing to support, just to make some pointless moral point about not liking Unfilter…. If you do all your business and personality judgement on this basis you must have a very small number of companies and people you will deal with.

  • http://twitter.com/Mr_Gentoo Derrik Diener

You know I emailed Chris and he wrote this:
Hey Mr. Gentoo, thanks for the very nice email.

Unfitler’s ratings are fantastic and we get tons of email telling us how
much people love it, are you basing these concerns because of a few
    trollish comments?

Don’t worry about those, that guy could not be way more off base. All
indications are Unfilter has been a big success, it’s just not very
    sponsor friendly.

In reality, the RMS episode costed Jupiter Broadcasting about $500/mo in
subscriptions. A lot of people bailed from LAS after that, and what was
striking is it was mostly our top tier donnors. Then Bryan’s push to go
open source siphoned off some of our more budget constrained donors who
love what he was trying to do, but could not afford to contribute to
    both.

Then the cancellation of STOked was also reflected in a drop of donations, as would be expected.

Almost two months ago Chrome updated and disabled our extension in most
our extension’s user base. However because of how delayed our reports
are, we did not see the indications until it was way too late.

Unfilter is my favorite show to do, and that’s why I do it!

    -Chris

PS. Do you still run Gentoo?

  • franzkafka

*Don’t worry about those, that guy could not be way more off base. All
indications are Unfilter has been a big success, it’s just not very
    sponsor friendly.*
Exactly. Not very sponsor friendly and a large viewership does not a successful business make.
Anyhow, give it a while and see what happens. Maybe I’m the vocal minority who finds the direction of the network unpalatable. I wish no ill will to anyone, but I really do think that the direction of the network is not a commercially viable one. I would imagine, you will have a very hard time finding corporate sponsors for a network with an overtly poltical show, particularly one on the fringe of what could be considered “typical” political opinion, and I believe you are narrowing your demographic (and thus, your income base) by changing the focus of the network.
Am I trolling? It’s not my intent to do so. I’m giving honest feedback on what I see is a real slip for the network as a whole.
I wish no ill will toward the network or Chris, but I don’t think it’s commercially viable with Unfilter as a part of it.
Again, my two cents and your mileage may vary.
Anyhow, all the best to all and best of luck to Chris and the network.

  • franzkafka

It may well be the case that the Chrome update is the source of the problem. If so, more power to Chris and the network.
However, as I said earlier, I won’t give money to something that is promoting an agenda to which I am opposed and I would imagine that I’m not the only person who feels less inclined to support the network since the debut of Unfilter because of the poltical bent the network has taken on.
Again, I may be wrong, and if so the network will be fine with or without my contributions. However, I think that the audience may be trying to say something through reduced revenues and that others who think similarly to me are too intimidated to post here (for fear of being branded a “troll”) and admit that they are not as inclined to support the network because of the direction it’s moving in.
My goal isn’t to troll or argue for the sake of argument; I’m just saying how it is in terms of why I’ve stopped donating and I’m speculating that I may not be the only one out there.
Again, if I’m wrong (and I may well be, it happens often enough), the revenues will rebound once the plugin issue gets resolved and life will go on.
