  • 12.10 is not an LTS release, Canonical experiments with stuff like this in these releases.

• This could impact other Amazon users like JB.

• Easy to remove: sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping

• A streamlined way to generate revenue. But Canonical must treat the Dash carefully. Users can’t consider it spammy, cluttered, or slow. Otherwise they’ll avoid a key element of the Unity desktop. A lot of us already do.

• This is another effort to make Ubuntu fund itself, in preparation for the long journey it has ahead to Android’ify the Linux desktop. Canonical has Ubuntu on a path to address the complaints that folks like Miguel de Icaza brought up about the Linux desktop.

• That’s not a cheap thing to pull off. Business wise, it makes sense to have Ubuntu generate some cash outside the commercial support contracts.

• This makes the desktop user generate revenue, making them important from a business standpoint. Thus a target demo to keep happy.
