I just got my Archos 70 Internet Tablet running Android Froyo on Friday, it is awesome and I like it a lot. It is responsive, very good screen, and around good tablet for under $300.

  • Fiftyfoldchris

I predict in the following year, Bryan Lunduke will have to change his Linux Fest Northwest presentation to Linux No Longer Sucks Due to Illumination Sofware Creator.

I predict that ubuntus usage share will drop a lot due the unity.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/DATA6WDNBSCFJL6JSP5OP3AADQ asedsa

Prediction 1: A major news outlet will write that Ubuntu is better than Windows.

Prediction 2: A vocal minority will make it seem like everyone hates Unity on Ubuntu, but Canonical’s own data will show the vast majority of average users prefer it.

Prediction 3: A major OEM will ship an ARM based laptop (smartbook) running Ubuntu that gets positive reviews from Engadget et al.

Prediction 4: Meego mobile devices launch but are dead upon arrival, reviewers citing the lack of applications as the main problem.

Prediction 5: HP puts WebOS in EVERYTHING. From smartbooks and tablets through to printers. Microsoft no longer can count on them as a alley in selling Windows notebooks as their business strategy has clearly shifted to Apple style control the whole experience.

Prediction 6: Android becomes compelling on tablets and finds itself in other applications too (in car entertainment systems for example). It becomes the biggest selling mobile OS by far, but critics still claim iOS is more polished.

Prediction 7: Chrome OS ships on Intel hardware and misses the boat in terms of the new trend for ARM based smartbook devices (the new netbook fad). Later when Chrome devices are announced which are based around ARM people will comment they are getting their act together.

The year of the Linix Desktop.
A must have prediction in every prediction episode.

Instead of glympse I installed a google latitude applet to my mothers google home-screen on her browser so she could just fire up a web browser and there would be my location sent from google maps. Less technical and advanced but all most people will need

I’m not a fan of Adobe nor of any of their products (I like the PDF standard though), but, referring to this discussion http://getsatisfaction.com/adobe/topics/produce_creative_suite_for_linux, it seems possible (if not likely) that Adobe will port their Creative Suice to Linux what might lead to a take off of Linux in the graphics industry.

I really like my N900 and so I hope you’re not right with prediction #4, but I agree that it seems very likely.
Also the thing I like most about Maemo is the *FULL* *Control* I get and that it is more open than any other mobile OS (except some community driven, but very small projects) and I fear that Nokia might destroy that in order to make MeeGo ‘userfriendly’ :(
But right now I could not imagine using a phone tht does not give me full control and a good CLI!

  • KaioShin

I predict that Linux Mint will not follow Ubuntu’s path with Unity and will because of that overtake it’s parent distribution in userbase size, becoming the most used desktop distribution.

2011 will also be the year of Android on Tablets, which will be fastest growing market next year after the netbook hype (is?) will finally be over.

  • Yaffare

Prediction: Fedora will become number one in 2011, because they introduce libmouseclick-turbo, lib-screensaver-turbo, libbluescreen-turbo, libclocktime-turbo and libfoldercreate-turbo.

  • Michael Emrich

Predict a strong upsurge in the public sector in the use of Linux and open source projects in general due to tightening of budgets and compliance to procurement procedures… also due to the popularity of Linux for once younger devs and operations folks coming into more senior level positions.

Also predict that ChromeOS is going to create some noise in the market place on desktops which otherwise might be possible Linux desktops… perhaps not in 2011, maybe over the longer term.
Yes, Stallman is beginning to remind me of that crazy lady on the Simpsons with all the cats… but he does have a point about loosing control of your data.. I nearly went with an online backup service housed in the US (I’m in Canada), after thinking about it some more, I decided to buy a drive which attached to my router instead… who knows what happens to your data when it enters “the cloud”… the drive runs busy box ;-) Linux FTW!

  • MintyMatt

Prediction: Oprah will give away Mint 12 laptops on her Christmas Special, and name the latest edition of Linux for Dummies part of her book club. :)

  • NinjaFOBs

Prediction: Ubuntu with unity won’t be as good as it was with regular GNOME. :/

  • http://scottlinux.com scottlinux

ChromeOS demand will lead to netflix playback on Linux in 2011.

  • TooEasy

10000$ for just installing ISC and adding some pdf files on the desktop hahahahaha the easiest way to win that amount of money, dammit!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dfrag Neil Griffiths

Prediction: Apple will release the next evolution of iPad that is missing half the features of a Ubuntu based tablet and cost 3 times as much.

Apple will then try to sue Canonical Ltd for patent violations. (eventually leading to Apple suing the entire world for minor and trivial things, sending world economy further into recession)

  • mrEvans

Prediction: Linus Torvalds will call a major developer/product/CEO dumb and everyone will point and laugh.
