DiskStation vs FreeNAS | LAS s29e03

Synology’s Linux powered DS412+ is a powerful server, wrapped in a ultra compact near silent enclosure. How does this unit stack up to a FreeNAS server you could build? Is the lack of ZFS support a hindrance? Our answers might surprise you.

Plus: Did Mark Shuttleworth shift the tone of the community dialog by labeling his opposition the open source Tea Party? It’s our blow-by-blow guide to the big stink over the weekend, that we will be smelling for weeks….

Chris: Is that the “dash to dock” extension (permanent dock on the left) you’re using on your GNOME 3 desktop? and what theme? Thanks!

  2. Matthew Kelley Says:

    Great show!

Man, I love you guys and love the show, but if I had to take a shot everytime one of you said “At the end of the day” in a episode, I’d be dead of alcohol poisoning 😀

  3. fumattchu Says:

Clementine should always be the default player. It’s flawless

I have a DS1812+ and absolutely love it. There’s so much more you can do with a Synology that wasn’t shown. You can upgrade the memory (in most cases). You can also purchase a DX513 (a 5 bay expansion) for most models that have eSata.

    Different strokes for different folks!

@Chris and Matt. You really have to examine yourselves re. the constant hating on Ubuntu and Shuttleworth. Correcting his ‘spelling’ w.r.t. systemd, coming from someone who can’t pronounce the names of half the software or correspondents of your show, is really rich. It shows that you are searching for things to find fault with in an otherwise really pristine and perfect desktop distro. Criteciseing it for being ‘meh’ more proof that it is the most polished distro out there. Numbers do the talking! I for one am getting tired of your fake critiques. Please move on
