How to Encode WebM & BSD Tips | LAS | s15e05

It’s an old IN DEPTH LOOK episode this week! Bryan is out resting with his new family, and we figured most of you in the US are watching the Super Bowl this weekend.

To keep your weekly dose of ACTION coming, I’ve put together a quick screen cast tutorial on using the Arista Transcoder to transcode just about any video format, into just about any other video format. Including support for WebM, and OGG Theora.

After that – Allan is back with a his first installment of Study BSD!

All that and more, on this week’s Linux Action Show!

    Watching the show, scrolled down to the show notes during the intro and whoa! New GoDaddy girl, paused LAS and watched that first. I’m sure every guy watching this did the same as me

    You mentioned that you didn’t want to get into the command prompt for FFMPEG. Well, Sinthgunt is an open source graphical user interface for ffmpeg, which works perfectly on Ubuntu and also has presets for WebM.

    Arista is pretty cool software, been using it for a while now. Oh, I would like your take on FF 4, that would be good.

    I’d love to hear your input on FireFox 4. I like the segments you do sans Bryan. Very informative. He is definitely missed when he’s not there, but if you’re one man down we might as well learn something, right? lol

    Not related but I find it kinda funny when I watch the JB shows at home on my personal machine (running Ubuntu 10.10) it has an ad before every show. If I have it playing at work on my work machine (running Windows 7) there are no ads… ever… lol

    And yes, I am working at work, I use Jupiter like talk radio there. I just happen to use the video RSS so I can switch over to see what’s going on if I hear something crazy. lol

    Thanks for the hard work!

    Folks there is also an excellent Transcoder with loads of profiles which runs fine under Wine called Xmedia Transcoder. I find it great and you can even queue up a series of files to transcode. Its freeware but Windows binary.

    That BSD video was more interesting than I expected. It resembles the Arch install I did a while back for fun. I really have to give it a try but over the part year or so I have hopped around way too much already. Currently very comfortable under Ubuntu which was also where I started exploring non Windows operating systems. Guess FreeBSD is next on the list.

    I’d like to hear something about FF4 as well. Been using Minefield for about a month now on my desktop after I got sick of Chromium getting messed up every few days(I don’t even follow the logic of me using nightlies). Got to say it is currently in my eyes the best browser even though I still use Chromium most of the time(netbooks love it).

    Did anyone else check out the full godaddy.co add on their website? Not what I was really hoping for.

    Once again the BSD section of this show was absolutely fantastic. I like the format in which it was delivered and everything else generally.

    Keep Allan as a regular guest – give him his own show! I’d be interested to hear his views on Debian 6 being released with Debian/kfreebsd

    Thanks for the Arista review, checking it out now to see how it works for the HTC wildfire. I assume “generic android phone” is the correct preset?

    As the author of Arista Transcoder I’d love to see a followup done now that I’ve gotten a chance to address some of the issues. I’ll be making a new release very soon but would love to hear your feedback before I do. You can test the latest Arista by doing the following:

     * Download https://github.com/danielgtaylor/arista/zipball/master
     * Extract the zip somewhere, e.g. your desktop
     * Open a terminal and cd to e.g. ~/Desktop/danielgtaylor-arista-….
     * Run ./arista-gtk

    Of course after the release it’ll be much easier. I’m hoping to get it included in Ubuntu 11.10 and other distros coming out around then. Feedback and testing would be very much appreciated.
