Some of the Chrome OS bashing seems very short sighted. Like the argument that when you go offline you are screwed. That is certainly an issue now, but a couple of years from now the HTML5 standard for offline web apps will be mature to the point that this is a none issue. Granted thats a few years away and they are launching a product in a few months, but my point is, Chrome OS is just ahead of its time, not stupid as you are making out.

I really do think that Chrome’s biggest problem is its just ahead of its time. And as the guy who started MP3.com said, being ahead of the times in the tech industry is the same as being wrong. Had the price of the Chrome books been cheaper than a comparative netbook then maybe people would be willing to live on the edge of the tech curve and wait for Chrome OS to catch up to their needs, but disappointingly the prices of the hardware makes Chrome OS pretty much a none starter at the moment. Also, while I totally agree that Google developed this OS so they can serve more ads to people, I think you are a bit misguided to suggest that Google is trying to control everything. If Chrome OS ever takes off it will be because all the 3rd party web app developers create compelling apps people wanna use. I fail to see how Google can control everything when you can visit any URL on the internet and load up any 3rd part app. In fact, its reasonable to think that if Chrome every took off there would be enough alternative apps that you could completely replace the Google ones. Yahoo for GMail. Flickr for Picasso etc.

  • Millario

Is it ahead of its time or is it just a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist? I don’t know if you’ve ever used Google Docs or any other web apps for anything other than a brief ‘note to self’ but if you want a word processor or presentation or spreadsheet editor for anything other than show note (no offense Chris) then internet apps just don’t have the functionality by a country mile.
There’s a few things that are going to hold Chrome OS back, firstly I like to print from the computer I’m using. Call me crazy but I think basic hardware compatrability is essential. While on the subject of hardware how many people own ipods? are they going to give them up in favour of…wait what’s the alternative to syncing a media device on Chrome OS? You can drag and drop in a file structure I suppose but that’s a bit messy, or we could all have android devices and Google music but people like iphone?!
I used Chromium OS last year and it was a nightmare, how apps run is entirely reliant on your internet connection. If I want to use picasa on a 3g network how it performs is entirely dictated by my network operator unlike if I had a software photo album where performance is consistant all of the time. I’m sorry to say that here in the UK at least the network operators have not created an environment where always online is an option, true there’s app caching of documents but if my internet goes down I can always still just listen to music or watch my videos, is there going to be caching of Google Music or Youtube on Chrome OS? Doesn’t that really defeat the point?
I had thought about getting one of these to have lying around the house as a web surfing device but for the price they are I think I’d rather get a Nook and put Cyanogen on it

  • Millario

On an unrelated note do you think that perhaps Amazon are one of the reasons Android 3.0 is going closed source? Amazon could release a Kindle like the Nook with a full Android experience but devoid of any Google apps in no time at all. Is it possible that Google think that with the open source model they think they’ve lost control and people like Amazon can (quite hilariously) say ‘Nice OS, very popular, I think we’ll have it for ourselves and cut you out of it completely’.
For the record I trust Amazon a whole lot more than I trust Google

What is funny about the 20% of the people at Google are running Windows is the fact that noone is allowed to run Windows unless they have special permission. So it’s sort of a silly thing of Google to promote.

Great Episode.  I am looking forward to Bryan’s Cloud server Suse Distro Episode.  I too am looking to migrate away from Gmail.

  • Gatan

Would you guys be able to give an opinion on an alternative to Gmail that can’t afford to run a web server for it? (eg. High school student). Besides Android, I’ve pretty much didn’t use anything else besides Voice, which I can just quit… I can’t quit Android though because it’s my phone…

    RE: GMAIL REPLACEMENT

Hey I have replaced Gmail with Zarafa which provides shared calendar, task lists, address books, email and sticky notes … its got webaccess as well being a complete exchange replacement (its 100% MAPI compatible) which means it talks to Outlook, thunderbird and Evolution as well. Best of all its GPLv3 and easy peazy to set up! I then use spam-assassin and Avamis New for virus and spam filtering which is extremely good.

I use Zarafa on top of debian and ubuntu linux servers… no gmail this end, it’s a complete exchange replacement for my clients!

    Cheers from Australia!

Athough Diana was too young to realize the difference, she still had many chances later. She would chose to leave when the marrige disappeared. But she didn’t want to over it. She still wanted to continue the title of “little black dresses” even the world knew they had no more feelings.
Maybe she was accustomed a line wedding dressesto be called  “princess Diana”. Or maybe she had done a lot for this title, she could not loss wholesale cheap evening dresses.
