Whether Linux Outlaws is the “go to” Linux podcast is certainly debatable, just like everything else is debatable.  On the other hand, as far as I can tell most podcast are not made by professional broadcasters and vary widely in terms of content.  LAS is unique in this regard because it has high production values, which cost lots of money.  Aside from Hak5 and a few others, the podcasts I listen to/watch are made by people who do it out of love for whatever they are talking about, which is why I like them so much.  Generally speaking they pay for everything out of pocket (providing the podcast free of charge) and have day jobs.

This means lots of joking and opinions.  If that was not the case then there would need to be only one Linux podcast, one podcast about movies, etc. because they’d all be the same – boring.  LAS nor LO are making/breaking the news (typically), they are only relaying and discussing it.  If this is not what I wanted or expected then I’d just stick to my Google Reader feed.

So I do not understand what your comment means regarding the bigger picture.  Aside from special exceptions like the BitCoin episode or interviews, I don’t see much need for thorough investigative reporting in LO or LAS.  In fact, I usually already know about what they are discussing in both shows.  I don’t listen because I’m so uninformed that I rely on a podcast alone to provide me with Linux news or anything else.  I listen to hear the hosts’ opinions.  It’s like trying to compare a
traditional CNN news hour to The Young Turks or a Spill movie review to
one on Filmweek.  The subjects are exactly the same but the shows are
not.  Not to mention the fact that relying on any one person or group, including Bryan Lunduck, to shape your perceptions about anything is dangerous.

    The bottom line is this:

    1. LO (and LAS for that matter) do not “blindly read headlines.”  LO is audio, but you can see in LAS’s videos that they are clearly reading their “news” from another website that did the actual reporting.  It’s safe to assume that this is common practice in podcasts and on blogs.  It’s also obvious that this can easily spawn misinformation.  In fact, it does all the time, even to the most careful investigator.  Most of the information you receive from podcasts is not heavily researched and it’s foolish to believe it is.  An example of good research is This American Life.  Compare that to LAS and then let me know who is just “blindly reading headlines” and who is researching.

    2. LAS and LO are vastly different shows. Period.

    3. If you make it into the top 10, let alone top 2, of a list of the best whatever, you should be proud, not spiteful.

    4. If the BitCoin episode was ill-conceived oh well.  It happens.  It’s much more beneficial to everyone to get into contact with the person/people/organization who made the mistake(s) so they can correct the inaccuracy rather than base the credibility of everything they have ever done on that one transgression.  I find it hard to believe that Fab or Dan would turn away such information.

    5. If you got this far you get a gold star.

Hehe, if either shows were representative for the Linux operating system I wouldn’t be typing this from a 64-bit Slackware edition.. Linux would never have taken off the way it has.

Please people, this is just entertainment. Linux Outlaws clearly states that they are highly opinionated and swear a lot. Jupiter Broadcasting is not the “professional journalism” it wants to be either. Both shows are good entertainment.

Want some good Linux-related podcasts? Here they are:
    Distrowatch Weekly
    FLOSS Weekly
    Hacker Public Radio
    TuxRadar
and ChaosRadio (Chaosradio original and Express are in German though)

I’m kind of on the LAS side, cause considering what the outlaws said about bryan…

  • Adam Lechowicz

Actually, I really kind of learned about linux through LAS, sooooo

  • Adam Lechowicz

Seriously? The fact is proven that the Linux Outlaws have said things like “I will snap Lunduke’s puny arms in half in the past, and they DO have wrong information. In my opinion, Bryan is being the good sport here and even said that he is NOT saying this stuff because LAS got 2nd.

P.S In my opinion, LAS should be first, just so ya no.

Thanks for trolling more with your swears.

I love how all of these comments except for yours are linux outlaw related. Kudos for changing the topic! :)
