  • Great show and great coverage of Haiku.

BTW, there is a push to remove vim from the Haiku distribution. If you want the greatest editor known to man included, be sure to mention this in the TRAC open about it.

Bahaha. You guys were talking about monitors, and 6 was way overboard. Brian said "3 at most, that may even be too much". I'm listening to this while glancing at my four monitors... Though, its a little different from what your talking about, and I'd like you to tell people about this software. I have 2 computers, each of them have duel monitors. One is running a modified windows xp, and the other is running ultimate edition 2.2. I'm only using one keyboard and mouse though using a program called synergy.

Hey guys, good review of Haiku!

A little hint - see that little handle thing in the bottom right of the workspace switcher? You can drag the switcher out to the desktop somewhere.. This works for lots of those applets, like the cpu/memory monitor.

Oh and the thing you were trying to remember that was cool about the BeFS? It's that you can do live queries based on metadata (attributes), like having a query for all mp3's by an artist etc..

Really great job n the Podcast. Count on me as a constant follower.
And notice I said "constant follower" and not "constant listener". Their is a huge difference. Too much to write in this little space provided.
The news you guys are covering is the main stream in computers and MMOs. Star Trek Online will be the coolest and greatest space MMO slated to come out and as a Trekkie, I am content.
  • #1) Bryan was bein sort of a dick starting at min 22, like man let the Chris talk, aint a 1 man show as much as u want it to be Bryan, let it be.
#2) The only thing video cards that are usable for are Floating point computations, with OpenCL GPGPU is the best and only way. And anyway, theres a 30 monitor LINUX demo, 6 monitors are chump change.
#3) Ill tell you more in a bit but damn Bryan is such a douche on the show i cant help but submit this now and send more later, dammit guys don't screw the show!
  • Seth Miers
i think its just you.... sure Bryan interrupted a bit, but he wasn't being a jerk. Part of the show is them having a discussion and arguing. Jeremy is a great camera guy.

    Keep it up guys.
  • He was just a bit more smug than usual, trying to steal the spotlight instead of usual discussions they have, thus acted as the leader instead of a partner, which I find improper for people with a friendship of their caliber. It indeed is just my opinion.
  • #3.5) Bon echo is simply a code name for a test version of Firefox, it USED to be Deer Park, Bon Echo, Gran Paradiso, Shirekto, etc. AND Firefox DOES have a process isolation project called ELECTROLYSIS, found here..
    Linux: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/...
    Windoze: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/...
#4) Haiku = an OS stuck in time, when people cared and hearts filled with passion but... the technology sucked by being so early, Haiku's tech STILL sucks cuz I booted the LiveCD, seriously not that fast. BTW Your teapot FPS # has a DECIMAL value in there, thus your running at 12-24 FPS, with 2 decimal values of precision, how BALLIN is 20 FPS boys?? :P
#5) Congratulations bwilliams2020 for winning the Popcorn Hour, hopefully it serves your well.
#6) Jeremy is an incompetent camera guy, he might as well have been high... he fuked up the first 14 mins, he wasn't paying attention to the end, get a guy who isn't retarded, please for you and all us.
  • Bryan
    Dude. Relaaaaaax.
  • Mohan
Awesome show guys, and you got me all pumped about Hiaku (which I haven't played with in over a year). Alpha is sure looking great but it doesn't pickup on my network card in VirtualBox. :(
  • Try using the Intel chip in vbox.
  • @Mohan, change it to intel 10/100/1000 Desktop and it will. I broke out my old BeOS 5 disc and installed it, haiku runs even better. Gotta love that.
  • Seth Miers
wow, you actually reply! ha ha, good work.

Did I wake up and suddenly it's 1999? Who the hell wants per thread control? Talk about micro management. Plus, it is really, really ugly looking.
Sorry, can't share the excitement. Linux does all of what I saw in the video, with proper configuration (minus thread control, see above)
  • Just test it on real hardware and you will see how much faster it is comparing to any major linux distro.
  • Some words about the Motorola Dext (Cliq, whatever) MOTOBLUR thing - it looks like the Nokia N900 home screen (or the N97 for that matter): nothing new but if the implementation is good then its worth writing about.
This is definitely a candidate for my next smart phone, though the GNU/Linux environment of the N900 and its ability to install standard Linux software is very appealing to me.
  • Rergarding user generated maps - checkout Waze.com which offers a downloadable navigation software, which is both free and open source (!) that works in Symbian phones, Android phones, iPhone and Windows Mobile PDAs.

In addition to giving you access to high quality (managed) user generated maps and the ability to very easily add more roads to the current maps - directly from the phone or using the web site, you get route calculation, turn-by-turn voice navigation, live traffic reports that gets factored in automatically to the route calculation and community notifications (users can report various things on the road, such as accidents, traffic jams, traffic police, etc').

I'm using Waze for over two years now, and it is hands down the most featurefull navigation software on the market *and* it is free *and* it is open source.
  • Brian
    Great show as always!
Hiaku sounds great, if for no other reason than it is Fast. With the speed of todays computers anything you want done should be completed in the blink of an eye. We should not be waiting for computers, they should be waiting for us. I will check it out soon.
    Thanks again.
  • Jadd
How do I subscribe to the show on Miro?
  • Peter
The first link doesn't work. If you were a bit confused like me, here's the date mentioned in the episode for you: http://www.computerhistory.org/tdih/?setdate=10...
  • chris
Thanks for the link, I'll fix the post!
